It’s been four years since RJD2 released an album (2016’s Dame Fortune), but the veteran producer is back in action with The Fun Ones.
Assembled as a mixtape using samples taken from numerous conversations with his contemporaries–including Phonte Coleman, J-Zone, Kid Koala, Mr. Lif, and Son Little–RJ’s seventh studio album draws largely from the basic DNA of hip-hop and funk music, with heavy brass, plenty of thump, and slick chord changes. With a large emphasis on modern funk and instrumental music, there’s still a few vocal contributions from STS and Khari Mateen (“Pull Up On Love“), Homeboy Sandman, and Aceyalone.
