Remember, a while ago, when critics were charging Lil Yachty for “not respecting his hip hop forefathers” when he didn’t prefer 2Pac and didn’t want to freestyle or whatever? mean, he was born a few months after The Notorious B.I.G. had passed; even my “real hip hop” curmudgeon sensibilities knew not to take it that seriously.
I say that because his latest drop, dubbed a “No More Beatboxing Freestyle,” reminded me of all of that. Mashing Coi Leray’s “No More Parties” and SpottemGottem’s “Beat Box” songs, Yachty takes viewers on a tour of his crib throughout the accompanying video. It’s probably not going to score him any points with the “real hip hop crowd,” but at this point they should have long stopped caring. I hope.
