Remember when Jay-Z was president of Def Jam following his brief retirement-slash-dissolution of Roc-A-Fella Records, and (literally) ran the label for a bit? This may be one of the imprint’s most ambitious foray since then.

Def Jam has appointed Snoop Dogg as an Executive Creative and Strategic Consultant, in a role that “will allow him to strategically work across the label’s executive team and artist roster.” Focusing on A&R and creative development, Snoop is joining Def Jam as “a senior strategic advisor.”

“We’re thrilled that the one and only Snoop Dogg is bringing his deep industry experience, strong relationships, boundless creativity and infectious energy to Def Jam,” said Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge said in a statement.

Hm. This is… interesting? I mean, it’s totally unexpected, but he could bring something new to that label’s proverbial table. Regardless, this is a big step for the rapper, and congrats are due.
