The hip hop world hasn’t even remotely recovered from the tragic deaths of Young Dolph and Slim400, and this weekend has just made things worse.

Shaun Shiller Fequiere, better known as the Kangol Kid from legendary hip hop group UTFO, passed away at 55 early Saturday morning (Dec. 18) due to complications from colon cancer. Now, it’s been reported that L.A. rapper Drakeo The Ruler was killed in Los Angeles late last night.

Drakeo, née Darrell Caldwell, was reportedly stabbed in the neck following an altercation backstage at the Once Upon a Time festival concert, which was headlined by Snoop Dogg, Al Green, and The Isley Brothers among others. While he was rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

In November 2020 Drakeo was released from jail, a little over a year after the musician was acquitted of murder and attempted murder charges following an arrest in 2017. Following the acquittal, however, he would almost immediately face charges of criminal gang conspiracy and shooting from a car, which resulted in him remaining incarcerated and facing a life sentence had he’d been convicted.

Drakeo would be released on November 4, the very day that widely criticized Los Angeles’ District Attorney Jackie Lacey — the person who ran the Drakeo case — would lose her job as Los Angeles County District Attorney to progressive prosecutor George Gascón. He would drop his first post-prison project, We Know the Truth, in December 2020, followed by the projects The Truth Hurts, Ain’t That The Truth, and A Cold Day In Hell (with Ralfy the Plug) throughout.

He was 28.
