Although deeply rooted in Hip-Hop culture, DJ Premier has never shied away from digging into more unorthodox genres of music, having collaborated with the likes of Limp Bizkit, Christina Aguilera and the Black Eyed Peas in the past. A few months ago, Preme launched a new imprint, TTT (To The Top) which focuses on more eccentric, left-field collabs such “2 Lovin U” with Miguel and records with Torii Wolf.
In the middle of blessing MC Eiht with four records on Which Way Iz West, finishing up the upcoming NYG’z album and mixing down PRhyme‘s sophomore album, DJ Premier returns with Nashville-based indie-electro band Cherub (Jordan Kelley & Jason Huber) for their “My Space Baby” video.
“Jordan and I were introduced over the phone after my manager put me on to their music,” Premier explained to Billboard. “This was back in 2014 while I was on the PRhyme Tour during our stop in Houston. I saw their video for “Doses and Mimosas” and immediately knew that like me, they are crazy in the head; so I totally got it. They are self produced, so they do not use outside producers and
I was impressed with how much Jordan knew about Gang Starr’s history and my career, so we linked up after my tour ended. His partner, Jason, is very skillful on a few instruments and he looks like a 70’s Porn Star. Our vibe was instant! We did a demo on the first day in the studio, but no lyrics came to mind. On day two, I dug for samples and I found this incredible sample called “Dark Side Of Religion” by Sensational Fix and it spoke to us immediately (don’t worry the sample is cleared)! I added my drums, bass, keys and scratches and we got another winner in the books. A perfect match!”
