King and Blast – “Outkast”

blame it on JES7 July 16, 2017

While New York, the South, Los Angeles and the Bay Area have dominated rap for the past 30 years collectively, the West Coast has seen a rise in new talent in the past decade.

As Meka stated in our latest 2DBZ Mix, The New West Throwback, this modern resurgence in Left Coast rap can largely be attributed to folks like Dom Kennedy, U-N-I (THURZ and Y-O), Fashawn, Skeme, Blu, YG, OverDoz. and more recently, the entire Top Dawg Entertainment crew and G Perico.

Smack dead in the middle of 2017, two new artists, King and Blast, whom proudly call South Los Angeles home are jumping into the public’s DopeHouse’s eyes, as they prepare to release their upcoming album Gift and a Curse.

While their past releases have leaned more on the G-Funk side of the tracks (see “200“) or on a more smoother tip (“Westside“), their newest single, “Outkast” takes a slightly different approach, steeped in 90s era sensibilities, channeling a bit of Outkast‘s “So Fresh, So Clean” in the song’s chorus.
