In music Kendrick Lamar is one of rap’s hardest workers. Spending years on the TDE sidelines while he and his Black Hippy compatriots honed their craft, the Compton emcee made the transition from independent maven to one of today’s most popular artists worldwide. Despite it all, he – and the entire Top Dawg Entertainment, for that matter – have never forgotten their humble roots.

It’s that sense of modesty which serves as the basis for his new vignette, “Hard Work.” Directed by both The Little Homies – the duo of Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free – and longtime visual scribe Dave Meyers, the brief clip follows Kendrick and a young ward throughout the city while K. Dot is approached (and quasi-accosted) by men and women of all ages. While the young boy remains in awe of everything, Kendrick remains grounded and reminds him that he took the road less traveled… all the way to the 11 GRAMMY nominations.
