Wow. This was amazing.
I’ve had such an apathetic opinion, sadly, towards Lauryn Hill lately. I mean, her older music was very instrumental in shaping my life, ways of thought and views on everything. However, her recent releases have not connected with me in a similar fashion. However, after listening to her cover another legend, Nina Simone (as well as Simone’s “I’ve Got Life”), it gave me a sense of hope and happiness that I’ve not experienced since The Miseducation.
Lauryn was the special guest performer on Jimmy Fallon’s late-night talk show – her first television appearance in four years – where she performed “Feeling Good” for the studio audience. Eschewing the usual help from The Roots, Ms. Hill was instead backed by a full-fledged band and proceeded to give one of the best live performances I’ve seen in many moons. This is the reason why so many people fell in love with Lauryn in the first place.
Nina Revisited: A Tribute To Nina Simone is out now.
