Kehlani’s had herself a helluva stressful career, and she’s only 21. The Oakland native releases two acclaimed mixtapes — Cloud 19 and You Should Be Here — in her first couple years of legally being an adult, earning a GRAMMY nomination off the latter. Yes, she got a GRAMMY nomination off a mixtape.

So it’s odd to see, after all the output over the last four years (which was slightly suspended for half of 2016 as she battled mental health issues), that her new project, SweetSexySavage, is her “debut album” — a term seemingly used to loosely describe an artist’s official entrance into the retail music world nowadays.

If you ask her, Kehlani says the project is a combination of the talents she showed off songwriting, producing and curating hit records from her first two projects. She’s shown off those talents on the projects first five singles: “CRZY,” “Distraction,” “Advice,” “Undercover” and “Do U Dirty.” The bonus track, “Gangsta,” also appeared on the Suicide Squad soundtrack.

There’s plenty left to listen to on the album, too, as it lands at 18 songs — all navigated solely by Kehlani.
